Ottawa should fix inequitable federal research funding for small and medium-sized universities compared with large institutions

The Alliance of Canadian Comprehensive Research Universities (ACCRU) is calling on Ottawa, in the falll 2026 budget, to overhaul the federal research funding model to dismantle long-standing systemic biases that favor large, elite institutions over smaller schools. By making funding more equitable, the government can unlock untapped innovation and support diverse research talent across every region of the country, ACCRU said.
