Hundreds of Canadians are dying “needless, avoidable deaths” due to overwhelmed hospital emergency departments

Emergency physicians Drs. Paul Atkinson, Alecs Chochinov, and David Petrie warn that hundreds of Canadians are dying annually due to overcrowded emergency rooms, which have become overwhelmed holding areas. They urge a national standard for timely emergency care plus additional measures that other Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation countries have implemented to ensure emergency departments are safe for patients.
